NCAA Football 08 Comment & Review

I’ve never been much into college football but this game changed me. I’m loving it! It’s a very fun game! My last NCAA football game I had was the 2003 version for the PS2. I have a PS3 and wanted a upgrade in the graphics and gameplay as the PS2 wasn’t cutting it anymore for me and after watching the bowl games, I had the itch to go have some fun. I picked it up off of EBay for .00 brand new and sealed. Best buy I have done in a while! I don’t know what everybody’s beef is with the game…I think a lot of people expect too much out of games today. I just wanted a game to have fun with in college football and that’s what I got and a lot more!

I’m really digging the Legend mode. It’s seems to be equal to the Superstar mode in Madden. I love how you create yourself and can add your high school in it. I’m 33 so my high school days are long gone but I went to a few games back then and the way the field looks and all, it looks just like the real thing! It’s great! Unfortuantely, you don’t have a whole lot of colors to choose from so I had to go with all green for my school. They were green/white/gold. You then get to take control and go out there and play when you are needed. If you are on offense, you play when the offense plays and the Defense is simulated and vice versa. I like that. I don’t like playing defense a lot so if I’m a QB, all I have to do is play on the offensive downs. The better you do, the more you impress the scouts and that leads to more choices and better prestige of colleges you get to go to. I just love the whole high school playoff format…4 or 5 games and you go to the chamiponship and I got to play on Viginia’s College field! That would have been exciting for a real high school player!

After you finish, you get your choice of colleges. Once you pick your college, you go through the calendar days and it’s totally different than Madden. No emails but you have 3 things each day…Classes (You can’t sim or do), Practice, and Evening Event. The Practice drills are great as they actually count for something…unlike Madden…and if you are 2nd or 3rd string, you have to complete the drills for points that will allow you to overtake the next position on the depth chart. You get 10 reps per practice. It took me about a week or 2 on the game calendar to get enough points to go from 2nd string QB to starter. Once I was the starter, I just simmed the practices cause I was making plays and din’t lose my position. You also get a GPA meter and you have to keep your GPA above 2.0 to play…If you don’t, you get suspended and you can’t play football till you get your GPA back up. This comes into play in your Evening Events so I recommend not simming those as something could happen. You have a wide range of different choices on events and some can effect yor atrributes on the field and your GPA. I love all the scenarios! One time I went out to play basketball with some of my friends and I rolled my ankle…Took off 2 points on my speed. You might get asked to go work out at the gym by your trainer and your attributes go up, you might have the choice to go out to the mall or stay home and study and if you go to the mall…your popularity goes up but your GPA goes down like 0.1 percent. So, what you do affects things in the game. It really is cool and so in depth how they do this. Madden would have benefited from all of this. I just love this mode as it gives me the feel of being at a college. Of course you go through the season helping your rankings and all on the weekends. You have certain accomplishments to complete to become a College Legend. Same as becoming a Hall Of Famer on Madden.

Dynasty is really good as well. Not as in depth as Legend mode but in Dynasty you control all the aspects of your team. Like Franchise mode in Madden…Recruiting, Depth Charts, Cutting Players, all that. The big point is you can import the draft class at the end of the season into your Madden 08 game if you want. So if you create yourself, when you go to the draft, you can have yourself on the draft list in Madden 08! Very cool.

Overall this is a very fun and in depth game. The gameplay is great as I haven’t had any issues with frame rates but there are a couple of things that happens. One is that when I have a dark visor, if my player is up close to the camera, the visor is there but if he is away from the camera, sometimes it disappears and then comes back on his helmet. No big deal though…It’s just a game. I gave it 4 out of 5 stars because I’m sure there are some issues with the game as others have stated but I’m really loving the Legend mode and that’s what’s got me hooked on the game!!
